Modern Ranch, San Mateo

This classic ranch home was reconfigured around the simple pleasure of dining with a view. By exchanging the locations of the kitchen and dining room, the renovation places everyday meals and entertaining in direct connection with the back patio. Newly vaulted ceilings open the shared living spaces, bringing a greater sense of volume, light, and ease without adding square footage. Throughout the home, custom cabinetry in the kitchen, living room, office, and baths reinforces a vernacular of organic materials and craftsmanship. Outside, a bright vermillion custom front door is set between the home’s updated exterior of stucco and teak siding. Drought-resistant plants provide a textural arrival against the bluestone masonry retaining wall, completing the home’s dialogue between architecture and nature.
